Perlite improves drainage and aeration of heavy and compact soils. Adding perlite to your potting soil reduces the weight of large containers making them easier to handle. Perlite comes from a volcanic, vitreous rock and is entirely natural. Heated to a temperature between 800 to 1100 degrees Celsius, it expands to produce light and porous granules that can be used to lighten soils.
