If you’ve ever stood in front of a seed rack thinking, “Is it too early for this?” or “Did I miss the window?”, you’re not alone.
That’s exactly why we created our new 12-month sowing calendars for Ontario gardeners in Zones 4, 5, and 6. They’re designed to make seed-starting and sowing feel simple, clear, and doable, whether you’re growing a full backyard garden or just a few containers on the porch.
What’s new this year?
We took our most-used sowing info and gave it a full refresh:
-
A complete 12-month calendar (not just spring!)
-
Separate calendars for vegetables & herbs and flowers
-
Versions for Zone 4, Zone 5, and Zone 6
-
Added popular fruits and extra garden favourites many of you ask about each season
-
Built in a week-by-week structure, so you can quickly see what’s right to start now
In other words: less guessing, more growing.
Why a zone-specific calendar matters
Ontario weather isn’t one-size-fits-all.
A gardener in Pembroke (Zone 4) isn’t planting on the same timeline as someone in Brockville (Zone 6), and that difference matters when you’re starting seeds indoors or timing transplants outside.
These calendars help you match your sowing schedule to your area’s typical growing season so your seedlings are ready at the right time (instead of too small… or way too early and stressed).
How to use the calendars (the easy way)
Each month is broken into Week 1–4, showing what’s appropriate to start sowing during that window.
Use them like a quick check-in:
-
Find your zone (4, 5, or 6)
-
Choose Vegetables & Herbs or Flowers
-
Look at the current month and week
-
Start what’s listed, and you’re right on track
You can also use the calendars for planning ahead. If you know you want a big tomato harvest, you’ll see exactly when to start them — and when to start your backup round just in case.
Bonus: a great time to refresh propagation supplies
Before the season ramps up, this is also the perfect time to refresh your sowing and propagation materials, like trays, domes, heat mats, lights, seed-starting mix, labels, and all the little tools that make seed-starting smoother.
If you’re stocking up, we recommend doing it early (before the spring rush) so you’re ready when your sowing weeks hit.
